Why Jesus Is Everything - Philippians 2:6-11
Introduction:
- Our lesson was two-fold. Paul was concerned about the church serving each other and loving one another. He uses Jesus as an example of humility. This passage has been a long-time gem of theology in understanding who Jesus was and is and is to come. This passage is both practical and theological.
The Theology behind the passage:
- Jesus is God
- Jesus took out the robe of godhood (God's glory) and became man
- He emptied himself beyond by being a servant
- Death on the cross was the ultimate end of his downward emptying of self
- But Jesus is exalted back to his original glorious state where every knee will bow and confess Him as Lord
The Practical Lessons
- The emptying of Jesus is a stark reminder that we ought to live a life empty of self
Humility means submission,1 Peter. 5:5-6
Humility does not mean that we are silent or passive people, 1 Peter. 3:3-4 and Rom. 12a;1
Humility means we use our talents and capabilities, Rom. 12:3
Humility is the key to progress, James 4:6-8, 10
