Topic # 1: Zone of Faith
Emphasis: Leaders are Men of Faith
Bible Verse: Joshua 1:9; Hebrews 11:6
Sermon Lessons:
The kinds of men in our time according to Weldon Hadenbrook, The Vanishing Manhood in America:
- Macho Maniac - in control, authoritarian, "I am always right."
- Great Pretender - lives a different life from what people see outside
- World Class Whimp - no opinions on nothing; avoids confrontation
- Gender Blender - he thinks he is a "she" or have issues of his identity
Joshua is a good example:
- Joshua 1:9
- Hebrews 11:6
Areas that needs development in a person:
- Compassion (Col. 3:12; James 5:11)
- Consistency (Matt 5:37; 1 Thes. 4:12)
- Cooperation (Psalm 133:1-3; Eccl. 4:9-12)
- Commitment (1 Tim. 4:7; Acts 2:42)
- Courage (Joshua 1:9; Is. 41:10)
The best way how to learn from each other is through...
- being an example
- having a conversation
The worst way in learning from each other is by....
- .....criticism
- .....comparing
Question Discussion:
- Pastor Bong said, "if you think women are hard to understand, try understanding the men." In what ways are the men complicated or hard to understand? What are some things that men struggle with that they hardly recognize?
- Ed Stetzer, Missiologist for North American Mission Board, said that "you are not helping the church if you are not delegating the work." In what way is this true in your church?
- There are four kinds of men according to Weldon Hadenbrook who wrote The Vanishing Manhood In America (1985) .... (1) Macho Maniac - authoritarian, self-sufficient, (2) Great Pretender - got it all figure out (3) World Class Whimp - does not want confrontation - always "yes" to others, (4) Gender Blender - doesn't know his identity. What kind/s of men surround you, your family and workplaces?
- Joshua is an example of manhood (Joshua 1:9). In what ways is Joshua an example to our men today? Read Hebrews 11:6, in what way can an individual be a person of faith?
- There are five areas the Bible tells us we need to grow on: (1) Compassion; (2) Consistency (3) Cooperation (4) Commitment (5) Courage. Rate them 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; 1 means "I am more like this" and 5 "I need to develop this". Identify your four and five and discuss in what you need to do to develop these characters. For example:
- Compassion - 5
- Consistency - 4
- Cooperation - 1
- Commitment -3
- Courage -2
Jesus in his example (John 13:14-15) reminded us that it is better to help each other grow through (1) example and (2) through conversations; (1) Criticisms and (2) Comparing does not help.
- Which of these do you need to put attention to?
