05-12-19 How To Honor Your Parents Throughout Your Life
- Because it is the right thing to do (Eph. 6:1)
- Because it pleases the Lord (Col. 3:20)
- Obedience is training (Prov. 22:6)
Discuss with your group some of the character traits you inherited from your mother and father. Can you share examples of how God has used them in your life?
·
Psalm 13:5, But I trust in your unfaililng love; my heart rejoices in
your salvation. God is trustworthy because of his
unfailing and unconditional love. You
best open the door for your young adult by expressing your unfailing love.
·
Psalm 20:7, Some trust in chariots and
some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. The
reality of young adults is they will test their limits. They will make the mistake of trusting things
and using people. Your young adult needs
to know that you are different than those.
·
Prov. 3:5-6, Trust in the Lord with all
of your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways
acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight. Best
advice to mothers in this stage of young adult life.
Young adults, the best advice to you on your actions towards your parents is...
“Give your parents joy! May she who gave
you birth be happy.”
Proverbs 23:25 (NLT One of God’s
purposes for children is to give great joy to their parents.
- 1 Tim. 5:2-4
- Proverbs 23:22
- 1 Timothy 5:8

Introduction:
Humility is a core value that God teaches all believers. It is the very foundation of what it means to honor parents.
- Read Ephesians 5:21, Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
- Ask, In what way are we to submit to one another?
- Eph. 5:22, wives are to submit to their husbands
- Eph. 5:25, husbands are to love their wives just as Christ died for the church
- Eph. 6:1, children ought to obey their parents
- Eph.6:5, employees are to submit to their employers as if Christ is their boss
- This submission does not come naturally, but by the power of Christ, humility is granted to those who follow him.
- Gal. 5:22-23, the fruit of the spirit is patience. Humility and patience are God's gift.
- Read Ephesians 6:1-3,
- Ask,
- What kind of relationship does the Bible say we have to have with our parents?
- State what benefits you reaped when you obey your parents? What is your experience about obedience to parents?
- Review (If you need bible verses, review lesson 1): We said that...
- As children, we are called to obey our parents
- As young adults, we are called to respect and listen to our parents
- As adults, we are called to appreciate and provide for our parents
In your observation, what stage has to be really guided well?
What can you do or what can the church do to train children to obey, young adults to respect and listen and adults to appreciate and provide?
APPLICATION: Remind your small group that the best way to minimize problems is to have a:
- daily quiet time yourself
- family bible reading and family devotion
- a time for the family to go to church together
- retreat time for the whole family
